on a cooperative parent preschool

“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” – Dr. Seuss

Ashleigh on her 1st day of preschool
I never thought I would see the day that I was done.  I think it might deserve a T-shirt. "I survived 5 years of co-op preschool and all I got was a shirt."

Honestly, I "got" so much more that I could never just fit it all in one blog post. It begins with just this. I thought I was sending my children off to get an education and in the process I got one too.

Ryan on his 1st day of preschool
In The Beginning

I had no idea what it meant to raise a child aside from the feed them, diaper them, stop them from pulling all the neatly folded clothes at Costco onto the floor, don't let them watch too much TV, get them to sleep without too much fussing and above all love them.

I wanted to send my children to a co-op preschool because I was in a co-op as a child.  I remember with delight when my mother worked in the classroom.  The memories aren't particularly clear but the feelings of happiness are.

Thankfully, when it came time to "enroll" Ashleigh in preschool in the fall of 2006, I found a co-op not too far from our house.  Bright Beginnings was a sweet play based school with a great outdoor play area, a huge sand pit, tons of blocks and lots of art projects.  We only attended that co-op for about 3 months until we moved to the Bay Area.  As I searched for a new school, I found 5 in our general area.  Much to my surprise and luck, our neighbors had their children in a co-op that I was interested in.  I was invited to their annual pancake breakfast that included a tour and the rest is history.

Play Is Work

CVPP, another play based preschool, became our growing and learning and playing and snotty nose center for the next 4 and a half years.  I can remember my first co-op shift there.  "Wow!  So many boys and they are so rough and tumble!" I thought.  Thankfully, the teacher gave me golden threads of advice throughout our stay that wove together a wonderful quilt of understanding and comfort when times got a little less than friendly.

This preschool had a nursery, too.  So when I was co-oping with Ashleigh in the classroom another parent would only be one room away with Ryan watching the other little ones.  Once Ryan was old enough I enrolled both children which meant I was going to the preschool every day (at least for drop off).  That year Dave was able to work in the classroom a lot, too.

I served on the Board of the preschool for 2 years, too.  It was an enjoyable challenge trying to run a business with your friends and I'm proud to have helped.

Learning About Myself

I guess that's what it comes down to.  For me, working at the co-op preschool benefited not only the children but me as well.  I have learned so much about early childhood education that I feel like I should have at least an associate's degree in it by now.  Somewhere along the sandy, glittery, banging pots together way, I learned quite a bit about myself, too, in terms of patience, perseverance and understanding.

It was hard work some days especially when a child takes a swing at you or another throws up at your feet or pees in the sandbox or screams for an hour after their mom drops them off or squeezes an entire bottle of glue on the craft table and you wonder why, for the love of all things sacred and pure, did I sign up for this again?

Last day I co-oped when both children were in preschool
I signed up because I wanted to be a part of our children's preschool life.  I wanted to be active and involved and understand what goes on in their heads other than "Give it to me! It's mine!" or "NO!"

I think I have a bit of an understanding of what goes on now and I think those basic tenets that the little preschool gave me are often the basic tenets of life.

In The End

I will miss preschool and the daily visits with friends.  The small talk in the parking lot and the field trips to the pumpkin patch, the library, the farm.  The gems of parental knowledge shared at general meetings and potty training tricks and tips.  The gobs of paint going down the drain as I wash out the paint cups for what feels like the hundredth time.  The clumps of sand on the bathroom floor and, yes, even the silver squeaky bikes.

One Door Closes, Another Opens

This week Ashleigh is closing in on her last day of 1st grade.  It's exciting watching her grow and read!  Good grief she can really read now!  And Ryan, my baby boy, asking all the time, "How many more days until Kindergarten now, Mama?"

It is now late spring 2011 and we're ready for the next stage in our little family's life.  I don't feel as though I'm leaving preschool behind.  I feel like it's right here in my heart everyday and I will carry the knowledge and importance of preschool with us for years to come although there will be perhaps a little less sticky, gluey hands, smashed goldfish crackers, and play dough stuck in our hair now.

Bowling with Preschoolers

The other week, Ryan's class went bowling as a field trip.  Fun, fun, fun!  Actually, it was the best time I've ever had there and it was a lot of fun.

The Graduates

She is now no longer in preschool... sigh... with a stitch of excitement, too.

The boy, too, graduated from the 3's class to, well, the 3's class. He has another 2 years there before they let him out. Clearly, from the photo, he is not ready... :)

Us.

One of the small perks of belonging to a co-op and having both children enrolled is that if there is space open on one of the days I work in the classroom then we all get to be in school together. Yesterday was one of those day and it was the last. Snack was crackers, bagels, carrots and dip, grapes and juice. The craft was making bracelets from beads and making foam photo frames. They sang Itsy Bitsy Spider, Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee, and a song about an Alligator, too. Good preschool times.

It can be chaotic at times and messy... it can also be so, so wonderful. I am absolutely and entirely thankful that Dave and I have made choices in our lives that allows me to be here today and tomorrow and the next.

Farm Fresh

The children and I went to the Smith Family Farm in Brentwood today with the preschool... it's a good time all around. Chickens, baby bunnies, eggs, free seedlings, hay, earthworms, sing-a-longs, a tractor ride, heehaw!

It was also the last day that I worked in Ashleigh's classroom. Sigh. Don't get me started.

Tomorrow I attend Kindergarten Orientation... oy. Again, don't get me started.

You know what though? I'm kind of getting excited right along with Ashleigh, too. It's been fun these couple of years in preschool and I just know the future with her will be just as fun if not more so... And you know what? I'll still be at the little preschool, knee deep in play dough, goldfish crackers and inky dinky spiders... phew.

Pajama Day

Dave worked at preschool this week. It was pajama day. How fun is that for a dad? Tons of fun, of course.

I am so thankful for this time we have together.  So very thankful.

Preschool Holiday Recital, Part 2

What a difference a year or two makes... the preschool class Ashleigh belongs to is made up of mainly 4 and 5 year olds.  Wow!  They really listened to the teacher today as opposed to Ryan's class which resembled someone trying to herd cats.

Our dolly, all holly jolly-ed up!

Preschool Holiday Recital, Part 1

Today Ryan's class held its holiday sing a long potluck recital dealie.  Ryan marched in with the others jingling all the way.  It was somewhere around the 2nd song that he decided it wasn't for him.  Eh, it's okay.  We enjoyed ourselves nonetheless.  Tomorrow we do it all again for Ashleigh's class.

This is basically where Ryan sat the majority of the time... next to me.

Fall fun.

So apparently you can grow other things in your garden besides beans and tomatoes and cucumbers... huh?  Of course, I knew that but sheesh it's working!  We'll see how it goes though... it's been kind of summery here so who knows what will happen when the temp drops below 40 in the evenings.

We went to the pumpkin farm with preschool.  It was 82 when we got to the part of the farm where the kids could pick out pumpkins.  We were all hot and ready to go and I can't believe I got a half way decent shot of the children in front of the pumpkins.  See miracles do exist.

Recently

*I worked in Ryan's class at preschool.  It is absolute madness.  As one mom said, "It's like watching popcorn pop."  Couldn't have said it better.

*I made a couple of meals that I froze in an effort to have meals already ready.  I'm not really into doing that but I wanted to give it a try and see if it pays off.... in sanity points.

*I learned about a woman who tried to commit suicide because she couldn't pay her mortgage.  She lived.  Fannie Mae forgave her loan... The woman is... 90 years old.  What is wrong with this world?

*I think this ad is pretty cool.

We're trying Uncle Sam, we're trying...

Somewhat exhausted but still have to do more today.

We got up a bit early as Dave needed some help getting home from a bike ride... sweet.  Anyway, then we headed off to my mom's to check in on their house.  Then we went to Target to get some deals on back to school stuff (we did).  Now we're home and it's only 1pm.  Tonight is orientation night at preschool.  I have to speak to the group and say I'm the one who has been sending the emails about turning in your annoying paperwork and yes it's annoying for me too, thank you very much so don't tell me how much of a pain it is.  Man, I hate getting up in front of the group.  Sux.  But then my day is done.

Oh and here's a silly photo from our last camping trip in August:

the last week of our "summer break"

Preschool starts next week.  I feel like an old pro at preschool.  Ashleigh will go on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  Ryan will go Tuesdays and Thursdays.  We will busy.  Definitely.

Lazy Sunday & Paperwork Monday

Yesterday we did nothing and well it was good.  After camping for 4 days then de-camping for a day then visiting with families and friends and another birthday party, it was good to just hang out with each other in our house.

Ashleigh asked on Sunday to try her bike out without training wheels... Dave made a pact with Ashleigh not to get frustrated during the whole trial period.  Ashleigh donned her helmet and pads and then removed her pads and packed a snack for this new adventure.  Dave never let go of his little girl and well she never really rode on her own however it's pretty cool that she wants to give it a try.

Today I worked at preschool getting the registration packets organized and the new student files set up.  Tedious, tedious, tedious.  Better than last year when I had no idea what in the world was going on.

Tractor ride.

So, today at preschool (the last day of summer camp), the teacher's husband (he owns the tractor) tore down the play structure (a new one will be installed in a week).  It was a crazy afternoon!

When she was asked if she wanted a ride she said, "Yes!"

Summer Camp

The preschool is offering a month of fun and cold treats in July... we accepted the offer.  Ashleigh's statement on Summer Camp:  "Summer Camp is great!"

in the driveway.

As we pulled away to go to summer camp this morning, I noticed a Transformer and a baggie of breakfast cereal in the driveway... dropped as we wrangled ourselves out of the house and into the truck.  I stopped mid-cul-de-sac jumped out and ran over to pick it up... sweating all the way.  I would have taken a photo but we were already a half hour late and well I can't seem to ever be on time for anything, dammit.

And that was the detritus and start of my morning commute.

Sleepover and Preschool.

Ashleigh spent the night at Grammie's house on Wednesday.  She packed about 4 baby dolls, crayons, Lady Dog, and 2 dollars in quarters (see previous post).  I dropped her off and she had a great time.  Went shopping, helped with dinner, had a bubble bath, stayed up late and generally had a fabulous time... Ryan did, too.  He was a trooper and only asked for her once.  Amazing, too, how going to Costco with one child is sooooooo much easier than with 2.

On Thursday afternoon, Grammie told Ashleigh that they would be leaving for our house soon... Her response, "But I don't want to leave, I don't miss my family yet... "  Yup.  She could have stayed a week.

Also, today was the last day of preschool.  Tough for many moms as this was really their last day as their babies were heading to Kindergarten in the fall.  Not us though... with Ashleigh going for another year and Ryan in for three more and our release date well off into the future we'll save our tears (and a hipper of some sort of alcohol) for another day.

Random.

* Mother's Day:  Went to the same restaurant as last year... if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  Very nice to start brunch with a bottle of this, too.  Dave surprised me by getting me one of these handbags.  Very sweet... quite nice, in fact.  I'd post a photo of the day but I can't find my blasted card reader so until then you'll have to wait.

* We bought bicycles.  Too fun!  We went out along the canal trails around our house for about an hour and a half.  Ashleigh is on a little bike that attaches to Dave's bike and Ryan is in a trailer.  Both have helmets that make them look ridiculously cute... again, no photos yet.

* Why don't dogs in kids' shows talk?  Like the dog in Word World or the dog in Jack's Big Music Show?  Or Pluto?  Why?

* Dave's work has slowed down a bit... he was able to come home early yesterday.  About 2ish.  So great as compared to the other week.  Nothing is better than hearing the squeals of "Daddy's Home!" over and over...

(photo taken in early Fall 2007... you can see Dave's truck in between the children coming down the cul de sac)

* Okay, it's supposed to be 96 degrees today and tomorrow about 103.  Ugh.  I thought we left that freakin' heat in Sacramento?  Better stock up on these or these!  (By the way, we watched an Anthony Bourdain show last night where he went to an underground dinner party thing and they served adult flavored otter pops in dry ice... ridiculous!)

* Only 3 1/2 more weeks of preschool left... we've enjoyed every day...

I think it's a record... at least for us.

BOOYAH!  Three birthday parties in three days!  A Spiderman theme, a pirate girl theme and then no theme but at a giant hamster maze place.  Yup, I'm going broke here...
